AKF

Based in Washington, D.C., the Aga Khan Foundation U.S.A. (AKF USA) is a non-profit, non-denominational development agency dedicated to improving the quality of life in some of the poorest regions of Asia and Africa. AKF USA fosters community-based programs in Asia and Africa, helping disadvantaged people without regard to race, religion, or political persuasion.

AKF USA was founded in 1981 on the belief that everyone has the right to the dignity that comes from self-reliance. The Foundation's goal is to offer a helping hand one that builds local institutions in which people actively participate in their own communities' development often in the most remote and neglected regions of the world. The Foundation currently works with 110 major projects and programs in 16 countries.

AKF USA is a member of a group of private agencies known as the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) that works to empower communities and individuals, often in disadvantaged circumstances, to improve living conditions and opportunities, especially in Africa and Asia. The network's agencies have individual mandates that range from education and health to culture and private sector enterprise. AKF USA works with others dedicated to international development, such as the World Bank and US government agencies United States Agency for International Development, United States Department of Agriculture and the Department of State to create innovative long-lasting solutions to poverty.

AKF USA is a private, non-profit, tax-exempt organization under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Service code.
