Quality Education for All

Each year Partnership Walk explores international development issues around a specific theme based on one of Aga Khan Foundations (AKF) focus areas of health, education, rural development and civil society enhancement.

Quality Education for All is the theme for the 2004 Partnership Walk. A well-educated population with a strong sense of civic responsibility is essential to a countrys long-term development and stability.  The foundation for a dynamic, democratic civil society that effectively contributes to economic and social development is a well-resourced, self-reflective and continuously reforming education system.  It is an education system that promotes initiative, critical thinking, innovation, creativity and problem solving in its students.

The Foundations education programs play an important role in fostering long-term development and stability in countries as varied as Afghanistan, Kenya, Tanzania, Pakistan and Tajikistan.  Working in partnership with the generous support of government donor agencies, corporations, non-governmental organizations and individuals, the Foundation helps build the capacity of educational institutions, which in turn offers greater promise to upcoming generations. The Foundations programs span from early childhood development to teacher training and improving school management to university level education. AKF places special emphasis on ensuring that girls, the very poor, and geographically remote populations have equal access to quality education.

Education is the most vital key to ending poverty. In developing countries, AKFs education programs for young children and the family use community-based approaches to ensure quality experiences and stimulating learning environments.  AKF is committed to increase childrens access to education, keep them in school longer and raise the levels of academic achievement.  The Foundations work in Europe and the United States focuses on the special needs of newly immigrant or economically marginalized families.  In several U.S. cities, Learning Centers for Parents and Children encourage parent involvement while providing a wide range of learning opportunities for pre-school children.

AKFs School Improvement Programs and Self-Help School Construction Projects work with the whole school system (administrators, teachers, school management committees, parent associations and local government) and involve them in managing and financing education, rehabilitating schools and getting more involved in their childrens education. These programs have been evaluated as highly successful, especially where many teachers have no more than primary-level education themselves and where the shortage of funds demands that materials and training be concentrated in resource centers.  The Aga Khan Universitys Institute for Educational Development in Pakistan, and Professional Development Centers in Northern Pakistan and East Africa offer in-service and advanced teaching degrees to teachers and school administrators.  AKF places particular focus on expanding the number of women teachers, which encourages higher enrollment levels for girls, as families in some countries are more likely to send their girls to school when taught by a woman.
