At the Village in Action, a depiction of life in rural Asia and Africa, walkers had the opportunity to explore a world very different from their own and discover the solutions that communities develop to improve health, education and income opportunities for themselves.
Through displays, photo exhibits, games and hands-on demonstrations, the Village showcases the positive results achieved through development projects of the Aga Khan Foundation U.S.A.
This year, the Village in Action in every city featured interactive and educational displays for people of all ages to enjoy. Popular exhibits included Atlanta’s colorful “Diversity is Strength” mural which was created live throughout Walk Day, as participants were invited to place their handprints on the mural and write a personal message to express the global spirit of compassion. In Chicago, participants had the opportunity to participate in the democratic decision-making role-play exercise, representing the process village organizations go through in solving real-life problems faced by villagers in Tajikistan and Kenya. In Dallas, participants had the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a village family, with each person playing the role of father, mother, and child. Each had to go through different obstacles throughout the day to come together at the end for a solution. In Los Angeles, participants viewed the real-life impact of microfinance activities through a mock tourist market that displayed the hand crafted goods of a local entrepreneur from Kenya. In Houston, participants enjoyed a lively on-stage performance by youth volunteers that demonstrated the importance of countries working together to create a better world.
